When it comes to entertainment and media, no one outshines how to develop a media job or career like Terry Semel. Terry Semel was born in Brooklyn, NY to a working class family. Terry Semel went to Long Island University and graduated with an accounting degree and immediately found work as an accountant. His jump into the marketplace, like a lot of people, was not too glamorous he quickly found his accounting job and new career quite “boring”.
Semel then heard about a sales training program at Warner Bros and did not hesitate to change careers. Terry Semels early years at Warner Bros was as a “movie salesman”. Those days Warner Bros was only known as a film studio and had not become the entertainment conglomerate that it is today. So Terry Semel traveled on the road selling the new movies to theater owners trying to sell them the next “box office hit”. His technique and drive made him stand out to other companies and in 1971 he was offered and accepted the sales manager position at CBS for their Cinema Center Films department. Within two years he was offered a VP role at Buena Vista Films, which is a division of the Walt Disney Company.
Within several years Warner Bros, where he started his entertainment career, offered him an executive position to come back. He accepted and soon met a colleague who went on to becoming his entertainment partner, Robert Daly. Within a five years, Robert Daly and Terry Semel were running the entire Warner Bros Studio! During the next 20 years as co-chairman’s of the studio that they reformed it into the giant it is today. For 20 years, they became one of Hollywood’s largest powerhouse stories. They took the 1 billion dollar per year studio and had turned it into an 11 billion dollar per year company!
Terry Helms created the TV Studios at Warner Bros as well as developed their music, record labels and merchandising endeavors into the US and International markets. They discovered, developed and took a chance on a young unknown movie producer named Tim Burton as well as developed the Maverick label with Warner Bros recording artist Madonna. Maverick Records which produced a new level of unknown artists like Alanis Morissette, Michelle Branch, Candlebox, Prodigy and the Deftones that all went on to becoming multi-platinum hits.
